Is the original Star Wars trilogy available without the special features changes on DVD?
The special edition version added things such as Han Solo shooting first, and the awful new ending on the 3rd movie. Can I find the original unedited???
Yes, they are available on DVD but you will be hard pressed to find them in stores as Lucas put a "pull from shelve" date on them. However, they can be found on Amazon. The links I'm going to put are long so I don't know it they will work right but it's worth a try:
Episode IV: A New Hope
http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-IV-theatrical/dp/B000FQJAIM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1215064375&sr=1-2
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-Versions-Widescreen/dp/B000FQJAJG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1215064611&sr=1-1
Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi
http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Episode-VI-Widescreen/dp/B000FQVX78/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1215064663&sr=1-2
If the links don't work go to the main page at Amazon ... click on movies & TV ... then enter the full name of each movie in the search box and it should take you right to the links above. You have to enter the full name or it takes you on a "fishing trip" around their site. By full name I mean ... "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" ... that should take you right to it. You have to watch for the release year to make sure you are getting the original versions released to theaters in 77. 80, & 83 ... they were released in 2006. (A little side bar, if you ever get your hands on the original ORIGINAL version of ep IV ... the one that has the title as "The Star Wars" ... well let's just say it is worth some MAJOR coin) Some people on there try to confuse you so keep your eyes open. The links I put above are for package deals but are the same price as the single disk editions. The packages have the 2006 release of the originals and the 2004 versions that have all the "changes".
Personally I like the newer versions although the two things you mention do stand out as screw-ups by Lucas. I mean come on, does anybody really think that Greedo could have ever got the drop on Han Solo ... not in that galaxy or any other so the change in the SE to make Greedo shoot first sucked and the change in the DVD versions to make it so they both shoot at the the same time makes it even worse. That one I can live with but the "Ghost Switch" at the end of Return Of The Jedi ... no way, never. The first reason Lucas gave for it ... "It helps viewers make the connection between the prequels & the originals" ... could have almost made me think Ok ... It sucks but I guess it will be OK ... then, as usually, Lucas had to open his mouth about it again and this time he didn't just put his foot in his mouth he put both feet and legs all the way to his knees in his mouth. He said that a Jedi's "Force Ghost" is the image of them when they died and that Anakin Skywalker died when he became Darth Vader. What ?!?!?! ... doesn't the guy read his own website info. In the starwar.com databanks it says that Anakin Skywalker died in his sons arms in a dockingbay on board Death Star II.
Yeah, yeah I know ... it's George's story and he can do what he wants and say what he wants to about it because he is in fact the "final" word on anything to do with Star Wars but come on ... this is wrong ... and he KNOWS it but is just too damn stubborn to admit it ... I'll reserve final judgment until the Saga Box Set comes out in 2012 ... maybe he'll come to his senses by then.
Now ... for your reading pleasure I present to you another statement that is TOTALLY WRONG ... the answer by the famous "MARKWILLSTAR" ...
Well first you can pretty much throw this and any Star Wars answer given by him out as pure BS. He is a fan who thinks his opinions are more factual than actual facts. He can't count either ... his comment on Anakin/Vaders age:
"By story line he was no older then about 30 or so."
Let's see ... Anakin is 9 in ep I ... there are 10 years between ep I & ep II so that would make him 19 ... there are 3 years between ep II & ep III so that would make him 22 ... there are 19 years between ep III & ep IV so that would make him 41 ... there are 3 years in between ep IV & ep V so that would make him 44 ... there is 1 year between ep V & ep VI so that would make him 45. I don't know ... maybe Mr. "Star" considers 15 or 16 years to mean the same as "or so".
I'm sorry to have used your question as a soapbox for my crusade to make this guy see the error of his ways but hey, when somebody gives you an opening you can drive a Mac truck through ... well sometimes you got to put the pedal to the floor.
May The Force Be With You ...
PS: To "Mark.......": It really is sad that you keep trying to pull this crap. I know spelling doesn't matter to you ... I guess FACTS don't either.
