Was an actual light sabre fighting art worked out for the Star Wars films?
In fiction different schools of light sabre fighting techniques were detailed, but is what you see on screen part of a developed fighting art, or is it all random waving and sfx?
The BBC reports of people injured in a recent mock light sabre duel, and amazon.co.uk will sell me a replica light sabre... but how do you use it properly?
No, they had actual masters help design the swordfights and such. There are actually several different styles, each with their own moves, strengths and weaknesses. Look at the ways Obi-wan and Anakin hold their lightsabers in the "ready" position before beginning. Obi-wan's is a more defensive stance, while Anakin's is more agressive allowing a powerful first strike more in keeping with his feelings. Mace Windu supposedly created his own style that is immensly powerful and skirts perilously close to the dark side, so he doesn't teach it to other Jedi.
