Who doesn’t like a good science fiction movie? Some do more than others, but they are out there for anyone who likes them. People who love to read buy science fiction novels, and others will be glued to the television set watching a good sci-fi movie or series or go to the theaters. Such people will classify sci-fi as a genre all its own, but there is a lot more to it. Science fiction is an extremely broad genre that is made up of many different sub genres. Many will put the sci-fi fans into a large group, with similar interests and tastes, not realizing many do not like that classification. Theater, television, literature and films, this ‘genre’ is one of the most widespread yet different forms of mass media today.
A lot of uneducated people in science fiction think that it is based solely on fantasy. True there are some similarities, but not totally. Novelist and movie producers have found a way to justify the storyline between the characters of sci-fi in such a way it actually might make one wonder if it can happen. Then fantasy media will portray impossible situations without much explanation, which allows you to concentrate on the plot of the story and maybe believe the story line.
The older science fiction classic movies are the greatest. Yes, today the wonderful technology of the new ones is great; it’s the older movies that are still classics. The older movies left you wondering and thinking, today’s sci-fi movies don’t. They put it all out there on the screen and then you have nothing to ponder over. Million dollar budgets and the finest actors just do not capture the imagination and creativity of the older movies.
Take Star Trek and Star Wars movies, and television series. Now they had what it takes to capture the imagination of youngsters as well as the oldsters. I can remember when Star Trek first game to the television. I would sit there with my dad with our mouths open, wondering if things like this could actually happen. Of course they could. Star Wars, the early ones did the same thing to the imagination, it just might happen, one never knows. One tends to ponder on the idea after watching sci-fi movies or reading the novels, can life differ from ours and what would we do if there was.
Star Wars to Star Trek and everything in between; the possibilities for the genre are vast. Sci-fi is a wonder in itself. Many different genres need so much to hold the plot or have the stories redone a hundred times, a classic science fiction movie or novel does not. You can watch or read it hundreds of times, same story lines, the same plot and are still in awe of it. Now go and watch a classic sci-fi movie and use that imagination. Let it go, think of other life beings. Live long and prosper!
